Please continue to pray and support all the families & those who serve our great USA.
What: The Medical Club will hold a “Be the Match” Bone Marrow Registry Drive sponsored by the City of Hope. The drive recruits adults, ages 18-61, to register as potential donors. A simple mouth swab is used to assay the potential of an individual who may be a possible genetic match for a leukemia patient in need of a bone marrow transplant. The potential “match” donor can choose whether or not to actually donate. A little known fact is that the majority of bone marrow donations do not involve surgery.
Why: Although all potential donors are welcome, but there is a particular need for possible donors who are ethnic minorities because of the need to have DNA similarities.
Please pray for the recovery of Max Gaines, son of Wendy (Van
Olden) , Class 0f 1980, and Gary Gaines. Max was involved in a near fatal dirt
bike riding accident over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
While Wendy and her husband Gary Gaines possess health insurance, they
are expected to pick up much of the out-of-pocket rehabilitation costs.
The Marino Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), has contributed $5,000 to help the Gaines' family, however this is not enough to cover rehab costs, which could exceed $100,000.
If you'd like to help, the Marino Foundation is holding a month-long fundraiser for the family to help defray the medical costs. If you'd like to help, send checks to the Marino Foundation at 10671 Civic Center Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. 91730. Be sure to earmark the donation for Max Gaines as 100 percent of donations will go to that family.
Also, the family would greatly appreciate letters of support for Max, and/or gift cards or checks to help with items like groceries.
We have begun working on our next alumni newsletter and would like to include as much alumni news as possible. If you've received a job promotion, had a child, graduated with special honors from college, or anything else that you'd like to tell the Amat family, feel free to e-mail me that news at mdelmuro@bishopamat.org.

On Saturday, October 25, the Classes of 1969, 1979, 1989 and 1999 held their individual class reunions. All of the reunions were well-attended and everyone had a great time reminiscing and sharing memories of their four years at Amat.
At the Class of 1969 Reunion, Monsignor Carroll was presented a class gift of $10,100. Under the leadership of Dr. Jeff Lobosky, the class took up a collection to establish an endowed scholarship fund. The school seeded the scholarship with a $25,000 deposit and will match all donations made to the scholarship fund until the principal reaches $50,000. With the class raising $10,000 and that amount being matched by the school, plus the initial $25,000 deposit, the scholarship fund now stands at $45,000. All future donations made by the Class of 1969 will be matched by the school and deposited into the Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund.

CSUN’S THEATRE DEPARTMENT TO PERFORM PLAY ABOUT END-OF-LIFE ISSUES
“VESTA” will bring awareness to the public on matters that are otherwise kept in the dark.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The Theatre Department at California State University Northridge will present VESTA, a play that deals with end-of-life issues, with opening night on Oct. 3, 2008 at CSUN‘s Grand Salon. VESTA, written by Bryan Harnetiaux and directed by Doug Kaback, will introduce the audience to real-life matters, offering an in-depth look at how to deal the loss of independence, economic hardship, family dynamics and care giving.
“"The point is to take it (the way the elderly are treated during the last few years of their lives) out of the shadows, and we're trying to do it as a community. We're asking how we can do it by bringing dignity to end-of-life issues. The power of art can provoke people and add a quality to our lives. This play can open a dialogue to a subject we usually don't come near,” said David Lackey, volunteer manager of Vitas Innovative Hospice Care.
The title character is a grandmother in her late 70s who confronts the loss of independence after a stoke, a series of complex medical, economic and personal issues following a fight with cancer and, inevitably, her death.
In addition to performances at CSUN and at three community senior centers, students can participate in a unique interdisciplinary learning experience. Students can explore issues through research, fieldwork and discussions with experts and community members. CSUN departments, such as sociology, theatre, health sciences, music and journalism, will actively participate in the production of VESTA. A panel will be held after each performance so the audience may obtain additional information regarding end-of-life issues and are free to ask questions to health experts.
“"We're trying to turn something so difficult, into a more positive experience, which otherwise is a difficult one. I lost my wife five years ago, it was hard and my family and I weren’t ready for it, so this play has a special place near my own life,” said Doug Kaback, play director of VESTA.
The Duke University Institute on Care at the End of Life first produced a similar project in April 2007 and looks forward to supporting and participating with CSUN and with the new production.
At each performance, a small donation to help the VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund will be much appreciated. All proceeds will go to supporting specific and immediate special needs of individual dying patients and families that go beyond the services that hospices can provide.

I am healthy, happy, single, divorced, whatever... I teach elementary school. I have three beautiful daughters ages 26, 22, and 9. My eldest daughter still lives in California with her family in Rancho Cucamonga and has blessed me with my beautiful granddaughter (age 6). She and her husband are expecting a new one on Christmas Day. With that said... I will be forced to visit Cali, as I am now a Florida transplant. I live on the West Coast of Florida in beautiful Tampa Bay (no smog!). I am not terrified of living where lightening or hurricanes occur (we get warnings, unlike earthquakes). Property values here are incredibly low, and you can still find waterfront property for under 250K! The beaches here are to die for and the Gulf sand is white and as soft as powder. The water is warm and CLEAN!! My best wishes to all. E-mail me if you want to touch base!
On May 10, 2007, twin boys, Cayden and Tanner, were born to Angela (Thomas) Eilers, '92 and her husband. The Eilers also bought a NEW home and Angela is currently a stay-at-home mom. Congratulations!

Mr. Joe Getherall, Parent of Joey Getherall '97, was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart on Thursday at Camp Pendleton. Mr. Getherall served two tours of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and was wounded three times.
HACIENDA HEIGHTS - More than 40 years after serving in the Vietnam War, a former Marine sergeant from Hacienda Heights has been awarded the Silver Star.
Joseph T. Getherall, 60, visited Camp Pendleton Thursday with family and friends to receive the long-awaited Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
"I felt a lot of emotions," Getherall said Tuesday from his Hacienda Heights home. "I accepted it not for myself but on behalf of my squad, I'll wear it for them."
Getherall, discharged from the Marine Corps in 1967, received the Silver Star for dragging a wounded Marine to safety and throwing an enemy grenade back toward the attackers.
He said the accolades are overwhelming.
"It means much more now even though 40 years have passed, simply because everything happens for a reason," he said. "Things worked out for the best. This way I was able to share it with my family and friends. Before it would have been just a cold thing like `here it is."'
Getherall was recommended for the Silver Star by his former platoon commander, Gary Loveridge.
Loveridge said it took decades for Getherall to be recognized because the necessary paperwork was either lost or never completed by the Marine Corps.
In the early morning hours of Dec. 22, 1966, Getherall moved across dangerous open terrain to drag a wounded Marine to safety and threw an enemy grenade back toward the attackers.
That night Getherall was the squad leader with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Division during Operation Chinook. According to accounts from Getherall and squad members, the squad was in a night defensive position near the Co Bi-Than Tan Corridor of the Thua Thien Province when intense enemy fire erupted from the 802nd Viet Cong Battalion.
Getherall was seriously injured in both legs and suffered a fractured arm, but he refused medical evacuation and continued leading his unit.
"When the bullets start flying and kicking up around you, you don't have time to think about anything. You have to act right then and that's when your training kicks in," Getherall said.
Getherall said he felt no pain from his wounds and continued taking ammunition to his squad, directing their fire and making sure there perimeters were secure.
In addition to the Silver Star, Loveridge also got the attention of Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Santa Fe Springs, who introduced a bill requesting the president award Getherall the Congressional Medal of Honor for the same actions that night.
Getherall was discharged from the Marine Corps in 1967 . He spent 28 years in law enforcement and retired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 1996. Getherall has three adult children, five grandchildren and has been married to his wife, Chieko, for nearly 40 years.

Cristi Lantz, 1994, passed away in March of 2005. She was able to attend the 2004 Reunion with her husband, Duran Villegas. She fought an inspiring and heartbreaking battle with Osteosarcom, a bone cancer, for two years.
I'am the husband of Judith Ann Bonkalski (O'Brien) class of 1963. I'm sad to say that Judy passed away on the 6th of March this year. She was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiform brain tumor in August of 2004. Judy, up to that time had never been ill. Judy began a teaching at the high school level in 1967, worked for 2 years, then took 6 years off while our children were small. She returned to teaching in the local catholic school for the next 24 years, then went back to college when the children were educated and she received two master degrees. One in middle school curriculum and the other in school administration. She then applied for the principal position in 1999 at her school and worked in that capacity until she became ill. Judy and I haved lived most of our adult life in Bolingbrook Illinois. We had two children, a boy now 36 and a girl now 33. We've been blessed with 3 grandchildren and one due at the end of September. Judy was a wonderful wife and mother, but most of all she was an educator. Though she is gone, she has left us with many wonferful memories and much wisdom to carry our family forward. God bless, Bernard Bonkalski
